ExxonMobil begins first deepwater production in Brazil

ExxonMobil has officially started production at its Bacalhau field, marking the company’s first deepwater oil operations in Brazil. Located approximately 185 kilometres offshore in the Santos Basin, the field is expected to deliver up to 220,000 barrels of oil per day during its first phase.

The Bacalhau field holds over 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent, representing a major addition to Brazil’s offshore oil portfolio and a significant expansion for ExxonMobil in Latin America. The project employs state-of-the-art offshore platforms and subsea infrastructure, designed to optimise production and ensure operational safety in deepwater conditions.

“Bacalhau is a significant milestone for ExxonMobil,” said Dan Ammann, president of ExxonMobil Upstream Company. “It marks our first upstream production in Brazil after more than 110 years doing business in the country. With recoverable reserves exceeding 1 billion barrels and a production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day, Bacalhau is a world-class development and a key investment in our future.”

The Bacalhau field is poised to play a key role in meeting Brazil’s growing energy demand while contributing to global oil supply. First oil from Bacalhau represents a strategic milestone for the country, driving technological development and strengthening the national energy industry. This offshore project also strengthens ExxonMobil’s position in one of the world’s most prolific deepwater basins and sets the stage for future growth in Brazil’s frontier exploration space.
